In Research Reports
Over the summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work for the Curating the Story Museum project. As someone who has never done much research in the cultures and literatures of young people, I was unsure what to expect and how I would be able to help. However, the team were all so welcoming and made me feel at ease from day one. My first task was to take over the Curating Stories social media pages, posting updates and announcements to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. It was a lot of fun to design posts and help promote various initiatives, including the virtual sharing and youth curating sessions. As a completely virtual project, it was both challenging and exciting to create engaging online content that encouraged people to participate. The main project I worked on over the summer was compiling a list of online museum resources for children. I created a large spreadsheet of over 60 different museums that offer some form of online educational resources, including colouring pages, games, virtual tours, and online exhibits. In addition to a summary of key online features, it also included a brief review of each institution’s offerings. Once I finished the preliminary list, I developed page-long summaries of principal features that were common among many different institutions. These were paired with examples and screenshots from specific museum websites. It was amazing to see how many institutions are dedicated to the education and cultivation of play among children, especially during these unprecedented times. By offering online resources, museums establish accessible methods of engaging with their collections and inspiring learning from home. I hope that the list I created is able to help the Curating the Story Museum team develop more initiatives and resources in the future. Although I’m sad that my time with the project has come to an end, I know that the research and interpersonal skills I have gained from the experience will help me wherever life takes me next!
